I would like to take a few moments to talk about self-care. I’m not just talking about getting your nails done or giving your hair a makeover, although these are things that can make you feel good. I’m talking about caring for your soul. What starts on the inside will be reflected on the outside. With all of the demands life throws our way, it can be so easy to get lost from who we really are. So much time is spent on working and raising families and social obligations that we sometimes neglect the one thing that allows us to do all the rest of the things – Ourselves! There is NOTHING selfish about self-care. Did you hear that? Go ahead and release that guilt now (especially you moms)! Here are some ways we can refresh and maintain the unique beauty of the soul that lies within to keep ourselves fullfilled, healthy, and strong.
Set aside 15 minutes daily to meditate and/or pray. I suggest you try and do this first thing in the morning. I KNOW how hard it is to sacrifice those extra minutes of sleep. Trust me when I tell you it’s worth it. Every time. I get up just early enough to make myself a cup of coffee, read my morning devotional, and spend some time in prayer. Take the time to fill yourself up with encouraging and empowering words. The immediate result for me is the peace and energy I feel. It drives my ability to remain calm through an otherwise hectic morning getting everyone dressed and ready for school. I find my energy tank feeling closer to full throughout the day. My thoughts are centered and focused and I’m able to accomplish more during the day. Go to bed 15-30 minutes earlier. I know this isn’t always possible but it’s definitely something to strive towards. I’m the kind of person that needs a good 8-9 hours of solid sleep per night to function at my best. I am fortunate enough to have a spouse who is also my best teammate. He makes lunches and does dishes in the evening so I can go to bed early. If you have a partner, I really want to encourage you to engage them in a conversation about how you can help each other get more rest. Going to bed early might also mean recording your favorite show and watching it over the weekend instead of forcing yourself to stay up late and finish it.
Accept help from others. We often think we have failed somewhere along the way if we have to ask for help. Quite the opposite. It is a sign of strength to allow others to fill in when and where we need it. If someone offers to make you dinner, let them. If a friend wants to come over and watch the kids so you can have a moment to yourself, let them! I wish I had let more people in and accepted help from them instead of being prideful and thinking I could do it in my own. I now readily accept help and I am always so grateful for it.
Side note: Remember to be thankful for the little things, always. It changes your heart and soul in a big way. Go for a walk or find some other form of exercise you enjoy. It’s difficult to dedicate time to this, but it doesn’t have to mean training for a marathon. Take a 10 minute walk at lunchtime. If that’s all you have time for, that’s OK. Remember, this is to help you feel better, not worse about yourself.
Do your makeup and wear something fun. Yes, it’s cosmetic, but you would be surprised at how much positive energy it can give you to start your day. You know that old adage about when you look good, you feel good? Well, it really is true! I know this is a fashion blog with a purpose and who better to help you dress your best to free up stress than Devika. She can make your life a little easier today and help encourage you to feel your souls inner beauty by displaying your outer beauty.
Thank y’all so much for taking the time today to read these words and thank you so much to Devika for letting me hijack your blog for a day! My hope for you is that you find your soul nourished and strengthened so that you might shine brightly in all you do.
