Good Trouble

 “Good Trouble…”

“…The death of a legend and a rebirth of a movement…..” words by the incredible @VanJones68 when he was talking about the death of John Lewis. Read that description again, and let it sink in. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I heard these words early in the day and I knew my day did not allow me the time I knew I needed to understand why this quote resonated with me. So, I found the most obnoxiously bright post it notepad (which was not located in any of the most convenient spots a notepad would be) and wrote it down. That night, when everyone was in bed, at the time all mothers everywhere can acknowledge is “mom time,” I found the bright post it note and reread the quote – at least 50 times – it’s really NOT that long of a quote so while it seems like this may have taken some time, we are talking minutes. The reason this quote made me think is that it gave me perspective on 2020 – because really, if we are all going to live through the emotional rollercoaster that this year has been – there needs to be some growth and understanding. Also, its not just any roller coaster ride….it’s like the rollercoaster ride where you end up sitting behind the person that throws up on the ride….and all the vomit JUST KEEPS PILING ON YOU….and you are stuck because of those awesome seatbelts on rollercoasters that hold you in place…and even if you could undo the seatbelt – you would be choosing to fall out of the ride….with puke all over you, possibly to (near)death.

BUT I DIGRESS….

There have been moments in 2020 when nothing made sense. The beginning of the year felt like punch after punch in the gut. Then when all of our minds were going a million miles an hour – just out of sheer panic with the thought of “what is going to happen next?” countries around the world, and then eventually, the US shut down. As a society we were all FORCED to pause, to hit reset. And then, as we were all sitting idle, senseless murders pulled back the thin veil that our country (and others) has used to hide the racism that this country was built on. We were all forced to face what many of us were always “too busy” to address. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So, maybe, just maybe….all of this loss, all of this ugliness HAD to happen. Maybe pause was necessary so that we would all have the TIME and the ENERGY to look deep into ourselves and address our own actions and our own personal bias.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We are now officially halfway through the year. We are living through a MOVEMENT, not in a moment. Just b/c you talked about inequality and racial injustice for a few weeks, does not mean its all over – I ask you all (again) – are you the same person you were on January 1, 2020? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As a mother, I have encouraged my children to get into some “good trouble.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
